課程概述

工程研究(engineering studies)是一個新興的社會研究領域。它雖繼承了許多從技術史、技術哲學、科學與技術研究(science and technology studies; STS)的資產,但也已成長至能夠發問特定且特別的問題,而更細緻的探索工程與社會之間的互動現象。本課程以社會學及文化研究途徑,探討各主要國家的科學家、工程師、科技知識及實作等等,並將它們置放在各國不同的人文思想、商業體系、歷史文化及社會發展的脈絡中,更進行跨國之間的比較,期望學生未來除能瞭解其他主要國家之工程、文化與社會互動關係,進而培養分析科技與社會發展之能力,並建立觀察及研究台灣本土情形的視角。 

課程目標
由於本課程的核心目標在於探討各國工程文化與社會發展之緊密及緊張關係,因此如何調和這兩種關係已成為當代各國政府重要的治理議題之一,亦即如何瞭解及處理因工程進展所帶來的社會議題,以及因應社會多元發展所新興浮現的工程知識需求,已是重要的一項科技治理議題。例如,近年來工程與社會發展之間最顯著的緊密及緊張互動之一,即是所謂追求工程性地技術至上或技術完美,但這兩者其實並不會是社會的最佳選擇,例如致力提升汽車速度的結果,除了會消耗更多有限的能源之外,也可能會危害像是公眾交通安全的公共利益。因此,在第二次世界大戰之後,許多工程師們已經了解到他們工作的社會影響力,以及回應社會責任的必要性,所以現在許多工程師協會已經認知到他們必須關心公共安全、健康及福祉的重要性,而這個認知及其所衍生的議題都是當代工程文化所探討的核心課題之一。
除此之外,也有若干的社會學家也提出工程建設與社會正義之間的相關議題,他們關心若干工程計畫可能會加深當地居民不公平的社會結構,例如大型的工程計畫較有可能會落入上層階級的控制當中,因為他們比較有經濟資源及社會關係去獲得這些計畫的主導權,而執行大型工程計畫的結果可能會鞏固上、下層民眾的貧富差距,甚至是擴大,還有效益分配不公等的問題;又或者這些計畫也可能會加深當地種族、性別之間的社會不平等的現象等。以上均包含在本課程將探討的內容當中。
